What is Diabetes?

diabetes

With more attention being placed on proper health, many people are starting to wonder what is diabetes and how this growing disease can be avoided. While there are many different conditions that are classified as being part of the same family, a general description about diabetes is that it is a problem that occurs when blood sugar levels are too high. This could happen due to a diet that is high in sugars or because the body’s ability to produce insulin to counter the sugar has been limited. The main symptoms of all diabetes categories are frequent urination and increased hunger or thirst.

The biggest problems about diabetes is how the condition negatively affects the body. Although each individual type of diabetes will have its own set of symptoms and complications, the long term effects of having high blood sugar will be problematic for many of the organs and systems of the body. In learning about what is diabetes, many people will become familiar with the well documented effects of the condition in the gastric and respiratory system as well as the increased risk of heart problems. However, there are other areas that the disease affects and should be reviewed.

The most commonly ignored problem with diabetes is the changes that happens in the brain of a person with the condition. A continued high sugar state will actually decrease brain activity and the patient will feel a high degree of lethargy or inability to focus on specific tasks for any extended period of time. At the same time that the brain slows its activity, the body could do the same, with the liver starting to burn ketone as a form of fuel. Any person that has some of the high risk attributes associated with the condition will need to learn more about what is diabetes and how to prevent it.
