Diabetes Treatment

Even though there are very few cases of diabetic patients that are fully cured of the disease, the amount of diabetes treatment techniques and plans are adequate for most people to live a normal life with the condition. Most of the treatment methods are meant to keep the level of sugar in the blood at a normal rate and are largely dependent on the specific type of diabetes that the patient has.

Diabetes treatment, in the case of type 1 diabetic patients, main line of defense to prevent blood sugar spikes and abnormalities is synthetic insulin. The patient must use a special device to test their blood sugar level and take dosages of insulin for regulation. The most common forms of this process are with an insulin pump or direct injections into the body. With the insulin pumps, the main advantage is that they are more convenient, but they also have the disadvantage of being more expensive. By far the cheaper and more frequently used method is through injection with syringes and needles.

For type 2 diabetes, the treatment plan changes somewhat. Many patients are advised to take Metformin, a drug that helps to maintain normal blood sugar levels. In addition, similar results have been shown to occur with taking aspirin when the patient is otherwise healthy and has no renal problems. While these medications will provide the needed diabetes treatment, another option is to use personal behavior to reduce the amount of blood sugar. This means that the patient will need to watch their diet, paying close attention to the amount of carbohydrates, fat, and salt that are eaten. Also, the cessation of smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol will also reduce the effects of diabetes. Lastly, every effective diabetes treatment plan should include regular exercise and should be monitored by a local physician.
